The first crossing in this stretch, originally made of wood, stood slightly further upstream than the current one, in the area now occupied by Piazza del Pesce.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"4\">Key Dates in the Bridge\u2019s Turbulent History:<\/h3>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">124 AD:<\/b> During the expansion of the Via Cassia, Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a new structure called <b data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"115\">Ponte Marzio<\/b>. This bridge featured solid masonry pillars topped by a wooden roadway. However, the force of the Arno river soon took its toll.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1177:<\/b> A violent flood destroyed the bridge; it was subsequently rebuilt with three stone arches.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1218:<\/b> The need for an additional crossing led to the construction of a second bridge further downstream, the Ponte alla Carraia, dubbed &#8220;Ponte Nuovo&#8221; (New Bridge). It was at this time that Ponte Marzio was officially renamed <b data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"225\">Ponte Vecchio<\/b> (Old Bridge).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1322 and 1331:<\/b> The bridge suffered significant damage due to fires.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,4,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,4,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1333:<\/b> A catastrophic flood completely destroyed the structure. The reconstruction, vital for the city, was entrusted to <b data-path-to-node=\"5,4,0\" data-index-in-node=\"120\">Taddeo Gaddi<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,5,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,5,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1345:<\/b> Gaddi completed the reconstruction of the bridge as we largely see it today.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,6,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,6,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1442:<\/b> City authorities decreed that the shops on the bridge be occupied by the <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosandofirenze.it\/en\/the-arte-dei-beccai-the-butchers-guild\/\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,6,0\" data-index-in-node=\"79\">Beccai<\/b><\/a> (butchers) to keep them away from the city center.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,7,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,7,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1565:<\/b> A major structural change occurred with the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosandofirenze.it\/en\/the-vasari-corridor\/\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,7,0\" data-index-in-node=\"66\">Vasari Corridor<\/b><\/a> by Giorgio Vasari\u2014an elevated passageway running above the shops.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,8,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,8,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1593:<\/b> The bridge\u2019s purpose changed drastically when the butcher shops were replaced by <b data-path-to-node=\"5,8,0\" data-index-in-node=\"87\">goldsmiths<\/b>, an iconic image that persists to this day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,9,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,9,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1944:<\/b> Ponte Vecchio is also known for an exceptional historical fact: it was the <b data-path-to-node=\"5,9,0\" data-index-in-node=\"81\">only bridge in Florence<\/b> not blown up by retreating German troops during World War II.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/curiosandofirenze.it\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Diapositiva31-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1781\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosandofirenze.it\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Diapositiva31-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>Il<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ponte Vecchio, an invaluable symbol of the splendid city of Florence, boasts ancient origins.
