This local term is so deeply rooted in the city&#8217;s dialect that there are several theories about its origin:<\/p>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"5\">1. The American Soldiers (&#8220;TO N.Y.&#8221;)<\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The most popular legend dates back to the end of <strong>Second<\/strong> <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"49\">World War II<\/b>. It is said that American soldiers stationed in Florence, ready to return home, had <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"146\">&#8220;TO N.Y.&#8221;<\/b> (Destination: New York) written on their athletic gear. When they left their clothes behind, the locals read the acronym as a single word: <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"295\">Toni<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"7\">2. The Olympic Uniform (T.O.N.I.)<\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">A more official theory suggests it stands for <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"46\">T.O.N.I.<\/b> (<i data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"56\">Tuta Olimpica Nazionale Italiana<\/i>). This was the official tracksuit given to Italian athletes for the <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"157\">1936 Berlin Olympics<\/b>. The name might have stuck and entered common speech in Florence.<\/p>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"9\">3. The Early Motorists (The Crusca Theory)<\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/accademiadellacrusca.it\/en\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"4\">Accademia della Crusca<\/b><\/a> (the prestigious Italian language academy) found the word &#8220;toni&#8221; in newspapers as early as <b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"118\">1920<\/b>. Back then, it referred to a &#8220;motorist&#8217;s suit&#8221; worn by those driving motorcycles or luxury cars. Some suggest it might even come from an old English slang term for a &#8220;simple person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"11\">The Verdict<\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Despite these colorful stories, nobody knows the truth for sure. It remains a linguistic mystery.
