It is an ancient Italian expression used during the Middle Ages for big construction projects like cathedrals.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">In the past, building materials like marble and wood were very expensive because of high taxes. However, materials used to build famous cathedrals (like those in Rome, Milan, or Florence) were <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"193\">tax-free<\/b>. To show that these materials didn&#8217;t need to pay duties, officials marked them with Latin acronyms:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"6\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">In Rome:<\/b> A.U.F. (<i data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"17\">Ad Urbis Fabricam<\/i>) \u2013 &#8220;For the City&#8217;s Works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">In Milan:<\/b> Ad UFA (<i data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"18\">Ad Usum Fabricae Ambrosianae<\/i>) \u2013 &#8220;For the use of the Cathedral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">In Florence:<\/b> A.U.F.O. (<i data-path-to-node=\"6,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"23\">Ad Usum Florentinae Operae<\/i>) \u2013 &#8220;For the use of the Florentine Works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Because these goods traveled for free without paying taxes, the expression <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"75\">&#8220;a ufo&#8221;<\/b> entered the Italian language.
