This guild was fundamental in connecting Florence to the markets of Northern Europe and the East.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"4\">Member Specializations<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">The members were divided into two main categories:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"6\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Vaiai (Vair-dressers):<\/b> They worked with &#8220;<b data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"45\">vair<\/b>&#8221; (<i data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"52\">vaio<\/i>), an extremely expensive fur obtained from the Siberian squirrel. It was a symbol of the highest prestige.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Pellicciai (Furriers):<\/b> They handled all other types of skins, from common hides to luxury furs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"7\">The Production Process<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">The Guild included many artisans who oversaw every stage of the work: they tanned the skins (<i data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"93\">concia<\/i>), cut them, and sewed them to create cloaks, garments, and luxury accessories.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">Origin of Materials<\/h3>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Importing:<\/b> The most precious furs were purchased abroad, specifically from Northern Europe and Asia.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Local Production:<\/b> For less expensive products, local animals such as foxes, wolves, and rabbits were used.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Coat of Arms:<\/b> The mystic lamb with the &#8220;Cross of the People&#8221; in a blue square, set against the typical pattern of vair fur.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Patron Saint:<\/b> Saint James (<i data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"27\">San Jacopo<\/i>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Guild Headquarters:<\/b> Via Lambertesca, at the corner of Chiasso Baroncelli.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Arte dei Vaiai e Pellicciai was the last of the Arti Maggiori.
